Clamp-on SONAR meter replaces conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meter
Customer challenges
  • An operating company mandated the requirement for real time flow measurement during a shuttle tanker loading operation
  • The shipyard had selected a conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meter on a new build tanker fleet, which was not designed for oil and gas applications
  • During commissioning operations, the conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meter failed to measure the stabilised crude during transfer
  • The tanker owner needed to replace their existing conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meters in order to operate and fulfil their contractual and HSE obligations
  • The end customer would not accept shuttle tanker without flow metering during loading operations
  • The vessel owner was facing liquidated damages and reputation risk
Expro Excellence
  • Within days of being approached Expro provided a clamp on SONAR meter and a field technician
  • Our field technician remained on board the vessel to capture and validate the data real time, dispelling the negativity the vessel owner had from their previous experience with a conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meter
  • Two transfer loadings were made of different crude API to validate the operability range
Value to client
  • The vessel owner was able to commission the shuttle tanker, avoid liquidated damages and risk to reputation and start generating revenue
  • The shuttle tanker was fully compliant with the operating company's mandate and HSE requirements for shuttle tanker loading operations
  • The vessel owner advised the shipyard not to use conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meters
  • As a result an additional five new build tankers will now be equipped with Expro's clamp on SONAR meters
  • This is another instance where low cost conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic meters have been incorrectly applied to straightforward single-phase oil and gas applications subsequently requiring a retrofit of an Expro clamp-on SONAR meter creating unneccessary additional cost negating any original price differential between conventional industrial strap-on ultrasonic and clamp on SONAR meters
