Expro Excellence
PowerChokes®
Delivery of first MPD system for major operator
Objectives
  • The customer had been drilling in the challenging Wolfcamp shale formation in western Texas and suspected they were likely to experience depleted zones, issues with communication between formations, losses and gains in drilling mud and wellbore stability issues
  • These issues resulted in the customer being unable to reach their desired target depth (TD), loss of mud and influxes which led to Non Productive Time (NPT)
  • The customer approached Expro for a Managed Pressure Drilling system (MPD) including pipe work to enable the constant pressure profile downhole
Expro Excellence

Expro's scope of work included:

  • Pipework and the installation of pipe work
  • Expro's PowerChokes ® dual choke manifold
  • Automatic Back Pressure system (ABP)
  • Integration onto a rig system to enable data sharing
  • Expro operators ran the equipment
  • Provision of engineering services including pre well modelling and real time well modelling
  • Using ABP created custom scenarios to allow automated trapping of pressure during connections while maintaining accurate repeatable results without affecting connection speed
Value to client
  • The customer was able to drill wells without any well bore issues that resulted in NPT
  • Customer did not experience any major gains or losses of drilling fluid due to the accuracy of Expro's pressure control
  • The customer was able to drill laterally to a maximum horizontal distance with virtually no wellbore instability occuring during the drilling operation
  • The customer did not need to change mud weights during drilling allowing a lighter mud weight which resulted in a reduction in mud costs
  • By drilling wells without pressure or well control issues resulted in avoiding additional days of drilling
  • Expro's automated system is high performing and can handle pressure better than many of our competitor offerings
