Deployment of first ABP system in Alaska
Objectives
  • The operator required a system to enable the control of pressure downhole as they drilled through challenging environments at low flow rates and with smaller choke valves
  • The customer deployed Expro's ABP system to provide greater pressure control while drilling on a coiled tubing operation onshore in Alaska

  • Expro tailored its ABP system to meet the project requirements, reducing the size of the severe service chokes to 1" to allow for the lower flow rates
  • Working alongside the operator, Expro also delivered a merged Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) fully automated system solution
  • The bespoke choke control system integrated into the rig, was capable of monitoring drilling parameters and was able to automatically control pressure
  • The control system solution held constant pressure through changing wellbore conditions.  This operation would typically be carried out by using a surface pressure, however, a subsurface sensor was used, allowing direct readings instead of estimated bottom hole pressure
  • The ABP system was able to work with Wellworc to share data, successfully estimate choke positions and help pressures which were more accurate for bottom hole pressure, holding a tighter pressure window
  • The severe choke solution enabled the customer to seal and control the pressure effectively with an excellent debris tolerance. As drilling through areas where large amounts of returns were plugging chokes, Expro's ABP system controlled the pressure while opening the choke to prevent plugging and loss of NPT
Value to client
  • The Expro solution allowed for a significant reduction in Non-Productive Time (NPT) while drilling
  • The customer was able to drill previously un-drillable wells with Expro's ABP technology
  • Due to enhanced wellbore stability, well production was increased
